This announcement is meant to inform Maryland Department of Human Resources (DHR) customers, stakeholders and our community partners about how a federal government shutdown could affect the agency. DHR is working closely with the Governor’s office and our federal contacts in Washington to monitor the still unfolding federal budget negotiations. Please check this site frequently for updates on any potential impacts to DHR services.

The information currently known to DHR as of 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30 is as follows:

  • In the short-term, no DHR employees or contractual workers will be furloughed if the federal government closes.

  • The USDA has confirmed that funding for SNAP will continue through at least the month of October.

  • The TANF reauthorization, which pays for Temporary Cash Assistance benefits, expires September 30, 2013. However, monthly payments will continue until the previously authorized federal and state funding is exhausted.

  • A temporary federal government shutdown should not affect the operations of the Maryland Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.

  • Medicaid recipients will not be impacted by a federal government shutdown.

  • The Child Support Enforcement program will not be impacted by a federal government shutdown.
