ELKTON, MD. – Cecil County Department of Social Services’ (DSS) Kinship Navigation Program held its 3rd Annual Kick-Off to Summer Picnic Celebration recently at the Cecil County YMCA pavilion in Elkton.

The event, geared towards grandparents and other relatives who are raising relative children, assists in reaching out to as many kin families as possible, in an effort to show the local department’s appreciation for their tireless commitment, dedication, and sacrifices made in order to keep their families intact and children out of the foster care system.

County Executive Dr. Alan McCarthy, along with Cecil County DSS Director Shalini Arora, attended the event and spoke about the importance of Kinship Care, and graciously thanked the families in Cecil for everything they have done as Kinship Care providers.

Leadership also recognized the Kinship Care staff team comprised of state workers, Cherilyn Larkins and Jeff Jones for their dedication and commitment to the children of Cecil County and their Kinship Care families.

“Each of you has stepped up and stepped in to aid in making the lives of these children brighter,” said McCarthy. “I commend you on your selflessness and dedication to improving the lives of children by keeping them connected to their families.”

Over the past three years, more than 400 Cecil County families have been served through this program. Cecil County Government and Cecil County Department of Social Services are honored to have staff, Kinship Care providers, and community partners who are devoted to the safety and well-being of children.
