Washington County DSS staff volunteered at the Hope for Hagerstown event

Governor Martin O’Malley declared September 29, 2012 an interfaith Day of Service calling on all Marylanders to engage in community projects focused on ending hunger and protecting the environment.  To support the Governor’s initiative, staff from the Washington County Department of Social Services volunteered at the Hope for Hagerstown event held at the LifeHouse Ministry Center at 515 East Wilson Boulevard.  At the event the Maryland Food Bank delivered bulk groceries which volunteers bagged for distribution to needy families.  In addition to groceries, clothing, shoes, coats, and personal items were distributed.  A free meal was served to all those in attendance.  Event organizers reported that 70 volunteers delivered groceries to 180 households, and served 350 individuals at the luncheon.

David A. Engle, Washington County Department of Social Services Director, stated “I appreciate the leadership from the Governor, the Maryland Food Bank, the LifeHouse Ministry Center and the DSS staff to help our neighbors in their time of need.  We look forward to further community partnerships such as these to help us serve our community during the upcoming holidays.”

Washington County DSS is a field office of the Maryland Department of Human Resources under the direction of Governor Martin O’Malley and Lieutenant Governor, Anthony G. Brown.
