Amye W. Scrivener brings years of experience and commitment to Calvert County community

CALVERT COUNTY, MARYLAND (January 4, 2012) – The Maryland Department of Human Resources Secretary Ted Dallas and the Calvert County Commissioners have announced the appointment of Amye W. Scrivener to the post of Director for the Calvert County Department of Social Services (DSS).  Scrivener has been serving as interim director since July of 2011 when long-time director Gary Anderson retired.

“Amye has been a member of the Calvert County DSS for over 18 years and has served in several capacities during that time,” said Ted Dallas, Secretary at the Department of Human Resources.  “She has done an excellent job of leading the DSS since becoming interim director and both the staff and the community have benefitted from the continuity she brings.”

“The selection of Amye Scrivener represents a very good choice for the citizens of Calvert County and the Department of Social Services,” said Gerald W. “Jerry” Clark, President of the Board of County Commissioners of Calvert County.  “Ms. Scrivener is well known in the human services community as a proactive, positive leader and earned that reputation in her previous position as a supervisor in our local DSS office. She knows the community and families and she is very well respected by staff. This is not an easy job, but we’re confident she’ll bring her experience, plus a reputation for concern for the well-being of at-risk children and adults, to her new position.”

Prior to serving as interim director, Ms. Scrivener was the assistant director for services.  In that capacity, she was responsible for the oversight of all adult and child and family service programs.  She brings a strong child welfare and family services background having served as social services administrator, social work supervisor, child protective services worker and project administrator for the DSS.

Ms. Scrivener earned her B.S.W. from Western Maryland College, graduating summa cum laude.  She earned her M.S.W. from the University of Maryland, School of Social Work.

With a staff of 79 employees, the Calvert County Department of Social Services annually helps approximately 5,000 Marylanders to buy nutritious food and obtain temporary cash or other economic assistance programs.  In addition, the department investigates approximately 600 instances of child abuse and neglect each year. The Board of County Commissioners of Calvert County share appointment and oversight of the local Department of Social Services Director position with the Maryland Department of Human Resources.
